Program eases court backlog

September 22nd, 2009

A new program in Cumberland County aims to vastly shorten the time people sit in traffic court.

It also aims to make the roads safer by sending some drivers to traffic school.

The program, called Traffic Administrative Court, started Jan. 4 in Cumberland County District Court with a small group of people accused of minor traffic offenses. The drivers, who expected to be stuck in court for hours, instead had their cases resolved in 30 minutes or less. Some were in and out within five minutes.

“I just knew I was going to be sitting here all day long,” said Marvin Glover of Tarboro, whose wife, Laura, was charged in a minor traffic accident. Laura Glover’s case was dismissed, and the couple was on their way home 25 minutes after they arrived. “That was just terrific there,” Marvin Glover said. more
